2018 Rules and Guidelines

Primary Judging
A panel of celebrities and industry professionals will rate the entries based on the following criteria:

  1. Spiritual statement – how well does the movie express a relevant issue from a Christian worldview?
  2. Story – how well is the basic story crafted? (characters, structure, conflict, dialogue, etc...)
  3. Originality – Is the story new and fresh?
  4. Technical merit – how well is the movie directed, filmed, edited, etc?


Notice of acceptance and approximate schedule will be announced on February 24, 2018

Jr. High and Senior High Division (ages 12-18) awards:

First Place: Somewhere near $765.43

Second Place: Close to $654.32

Third Place: About $543.21

Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Spiritual Message, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Original Score

College Division (ages 18-22) awards

Best of College: $750.17

Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Spiritual Message, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Original Score

Award winners may receive their trophies and/or giant checks with their team on stage. If the winners or their representatives cannot be present, their awards, trophies, and or checks (not the giant ones) will be shipped pre-paid.

Each entry will receive two really cool lanyards and all-access passes to the festival which include admission, snack bar credit, a flash drive with the 2018 CYFF movies, and a VIP backstage dinner reception with our celebrity judges and the CYFS board of directors ($120 value).

General admission tickets will be available online by February 1st.

Rules for the 24th annual CYFF, March 10-11, 2018
  • The contest is open to youth ages 12-22, with complete disregard to geographical location, race, hair, religion, creed, sex, ancestry, disabilities, DNA, or military service. Cash awards will be payable to the primary contact, usually the producer/director.
  • Two divisions: Teen (Middle school / High school; generally 12-18yrs.); and College; (generally 18-22yrs). Teams that span both age groups should probably enter the division based on age of your director. Please contact us if you need further clarification.
  • All movies must have begun principle production after March 5, 2017. Writing and pre-production may be earlier.
  • Primary positions for talent and crew must be within the specified age range. Only supporting roles may be from outside the age brackets. Writing, crew, and post production must be done by those of age within their division. If any crew or talent are outside the division age bracket, the individual will be inelligible for award consideration, and movie may be disqualified.
  • Minimal adult help is allowed and encouraged. This means adults may advise or demonstrate with the goal of teaching. Adults may drive, help secure equipment and locations, or provide the pizza. Adults should strive to help kids be better filmmakers, learn new skills, and develop hidden talents.
  • Movies must be wholesome and compatible with a Biblical Christian worldview. TEEN division entries must also be age-appropriate and family friendly for screening to younger audiences.
  • All music copyright, talent, and location releases must be provided with each entry. Best Original Score award will only be considered for original musical scores written specifically for this entry.
  • Running time is limited to ten minutes, not including credits. Accurate and complete credits are required on-screen and on file. Credits and outtakes might not be screened at discretion of the CYFF.
  • Entries must be uploaded online according to guidelines. An additional backup flash drive or DVD may be sent "just in case" or "to feel better". 
  • Final entry deadline and fee is $100.00 if received by 11:59pm, Monday, February 19th, 2018 Later entries will not be accepted or returned.
  • Regular entry fee is $75.00 if received by 11:59pm, Monday, February 5, 2018

  • Super Early-bird entry fee is $50.00 if received by 11:59pm, Monday, January 22, 2018
